HAYLEY HOT FOOTS IT TO GOLD
Hayley McLean age 15 of Hassenbrook School in Stanford-le-Hope competed last week in the National Combined Events Championships at Sheffield Indoor Arena. Hayley won gold in the U17 pentathlon – never dropping out of the top two throughout the competition. She started the day by winning the 60m hurdles and jumping 1cm short of her best in the high jump (1.57cm).
Good performances in both the shot putt and long jump left Hayley in 2nd place going into the last event, the 800m. Hayley’s storming run gave her an unassailable lead of 12 seconds over her nearest rival securing her the gold medal and a new personal best of 3291points, which now ranks her number one in the UK.
To make the day even more memorable, Hayley met one of her idols, World Champion Heptathlete, Jessica Ennis, who presented Hayley with her gold medal.
