School History

The origins of the name of Hassenbrook School can be traced back hundreds of years.

It seems that in Saxon times much of the land in the area was owned by a chieftain named Hassa. A brook, known as Hassa's brook, flowed south towards the Thames through his land. This name was eventually corrupted to Hassenbrook.

The bend in the river Thames near this spot is called The Hope. In the days of sail, sailors had high hopes that they would reach home if they reached this bend because the remainder of their journey to London was more sheltered and safe. A river joining the Thames at this point was also known as the Hope. It was made fordable at one spot by stones thrown into the river bed and became known as the stone ford on the Hope. Hence, Stanford-le-Hope! (Please click the link to find ut more about our town).

The Hope is associated with Stanford and the days of sail are depicted in our crest.
